At the new 970 agricultural product connection forum here, Mr. Doan Ngoc Co, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai, said that this province has just included passion fruit in the list of 4 key fruit trees of the province and has the largest area of 4,000 hectares. By 2025, this province plans to develop passion fruit trees to 20,000 hectares, becoming the largest passion fruit capital in the country.
According to the Department of Crop Production, passion fruit is in the top 10 fruit trees with the highest export value in 2021. Over the past five years, Vietnam's passion fruit output and export turnover have increased by more than 300%. Vietnam's exports of this product are second only to Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador.
Currently, Vietnamese passion fruit has been exported to markets with strict requirements on quality, service inspection, and food safety such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan (China), and Switzerland. The Ministry is negotiating to open the market for fresh passion fruit to other major markets such as Australia, Japan, and Thailand.
This year, passion fruit production is estimated to reach 135,000 tons, grown mainly in Gia Lai and Dak Lak. This is a crop that is evaluated in localities for its high economic efficiency. The profit per hectare of passion fruit is up to 350-400 million VND.
In addition to passion fruit, China has also drafted a protocol on passion fruit, expected to be signed this year. For the US market, grapefruit is also completing the final steps for export.
