TTO - Presenting solutions and the fruit consumption situation of the province, Mr. Doan Ngoc Co - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai province - said that the province is orienting to develop bananas and passion fruit because the profit is up to 350 - 400 million VND/ha.
In the online forum connecting agricultural products organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on June 8, many provinces and cities presented solutions and pictures of agricultural products in the province to find a way out.
Mr. Doan Ngoc Co said that the province currently has about 21,500 hectares of fruit trees, and the province has not encountered any bottlenecks in the consumption of agricultural products.
Mr. Co said the province plans to expand the area of passion fruit to 20,000 hectares by 2025, the largest in the country, bringing the area of fruit trees to 55,000 hectares by 2025 and 100,000 hectares by 2030.
"To do this, Gia Lai has a policy of converting ineffective cassava, sugarcane, cashew, and rubber growing areas to focus on fruit trees. There are 4 types of trees planned by the province into the main export group including: passion fruit, banana, avocado, and durian. Gia Lai plans to develop passion fruit trees from 4,000 hectares to 20,000 hectares, the largest in the country.
This is a crop that brings profits of up to 350 - 400 million VND/ha, helping to ensure the lives and livelihoods of farmers. Besides passion fruit, bananas also bring similar profits after deducting all costs," Mr. Co shared.
To achieve such high value, according to Mr. Co, Gia Lai province has advocated applying GlobalGAP standards in production organization with a current area of about 9,000 hectares.
Mr. Co informed: "The province applies this standard focusing on two main types of trees: passion fruit and banana. Currently, Gia Lai has 51 growing area codes and 21 packaging facilities. In addition, another solution is that the province builds organic farming processes and water-saving to develop fruit trees sustainably".
If Gia Lai is successful in growing bananas and passion fruit thanks to GlobalGAP standards, Soc Trang will export star apples to the United States thanks to registering growing area codes and participating in cooperatives.
Presenting at the Soc Trang province bridge, Mr. Tran Trong Khiem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang province - said that agricultural products in the province have been consumed well, without congestion.
"The province has been granted 77 growing area codes. Currently, Soc Trang's fruit products are attracting attention from many international markets. In the near future, the province will export 40 tons of star apples to the United States. This bright spot is thanks to the people proactively improving quality, registering growing area codes, and participating in cooperatives to produce other types of fruit," said Mr. Khiem.
To avoid people harvesting agricultural products at the same time and traders not being able to buy everything, Mr. Khiem said that Soc Trang province has planned to build 4 agricultural product warehouses in 4 regions: fruits, onions, rice, and seafood to help people preserve agricultural products in good conditions, avoiding congestion.
